This section introduces students to give them an understanding of the role and benefits of problem structuring methods (often referred to as 'Soft OR') as well as in depth knowledge about three particular, well-established methods namely Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA) and Strategic Choice Approach.
To give the class a general understanding of Problem Structuring Methods (PSM), how to use the methods and where/under what conditions they can be applied.
Subject specific knowledge and skills
- To understand the benefits and applicability of problem structuring methods and their relationship to more quantitative Management Science/Operational Research methods
- To understand the conceptual frameworks of three specific PSMs, along with their characteristics, techniques, tools and applicability.
Cognitive abilities and non-subject specific skills
- Ability to synthesise literature and relate concepts to practice
